barcelona 6-1 getafe messi surroundedThe midday kick-off time proved to suit Barça well as Getafe were hit for six at Camp Nou. A big crowd of over 85,000 were treated to an exhibition of attacking football, and goals from Alexis Sanchez, Leo Messi, David Villa, Cristian Tello, Andrés Iniesta and Gerard Piqué maintain Barça’s healthy advantage over Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid at the top of the table.

FULL HIGHLIGHTS AND GOALS

There were various changes to the so-called once de gala with Thiago Alcántara replacing the injured Xavi while Adriano, Alex Song, Alexis and Villa started in place of Alves, Busquets, Fabregas and Pedro. There was no sign of any sleepiness as Barça got off to a flying start. After just five minutes Iniesta spotted Alexis’s diagonal run and sent an exceptional defence-splitting pass which Alexis controlled well with his right foot before nicking the ball back past keeper Jordi Codina with his left. Much has been said of Alexis’s poor finishing this season but there has never been much doubt about the quality of his off the ball movement. Here his run was again first class and his finish was cool, though the brilliance of Iniesta’s pass deserved the goal by itself.
barcelona 6-1 getafe messi goalIniesta’s form in recent weeks has been extraordinary and he was heavily involved in Barça’s second goal in the 13th minute. Thiago began the move finding Iniesta to his left, then after exchanging passes with Alba, Iniesta sent in another perfectly weighted pass for Thiago who had made a storming run into the area where after controlling he spotted Messi in a better position, laying the ball off for the Argentinian to sweep home his 299th goal for Barça.
The 300th goal looked like it would arrive pretty soon. In the 20th minute Messi received a ball out of defence from Adriano and after making a lightning quick turn he set off on a direct run for goal, only Lopo stood in his way and it must be a frightening sight having Messi coming full pelt towards you, but the Getafe defender held his ground and made an excellent intervention to stop the Argentinian going through.
Villa had been drifting inside to play a more central attacking role with little luck in the first twenty-five minutes. He started to become more involved as he moved towards the left, first sending a neat back heel for Messi to cross unsuccessfully and soon after it was Villa crossing after a very long attack but the four-time Ballon d’Or winner failed to make contact with his spectacular attempt at an overhead kick.
Getafe hadn’t come anyway near Victor Valdés’s goal until a hopeful chip from Adrian Colunga went not far over in the 30th minute. Barça were straight back at the other end with a more confident Alexis crossing for Messi who somehow pulled his volley from four yards back across the goal and against the post. Then soon after Alba got forward to cross for Villa’s first decent chance but the Asturian fired narrowly wide from ten yards.
Barça were controlling the game with a possession of 75%-25% and the chances kept coming. In the 37th minute Messi’s dribble freed Villa on the left but the cross was just to high for Messi to keep his header down. Then shortly before half time Alexis made a fine run into the goal area from the right before pulling the ball back to Thiago who was denied a goal by a combination of Miguel Torres and keeper Codina.
At half time Alves came on for Adriano, who’d taken a whack on the calf muscle, with little change to the general pattern of Barça domination. Iniesta continued to shine, making one sensational run into the area from the left that was only stopped by a last ditch tackle from Mehdi Lacen. Then in the 57th minute Villa found the overlapping Alba whose cross created a double chance with first Messi’s shot being block by Alexis Delgado and then Alexis was also charged down by the Getafe defence.
barcelona 6-1 getafe villa goalWith the score at 2-0 there was always the sneaking feeling that Getafe might score out of the blue to complicate matters. However, the third goal came just a minute after the Messi-Alexis double chance. Messi found Iniesta who sent the ball out to Alba 40 yards out near the left touchline, the full-back sent a crisp pass forward for Villa who’d made the diagonal run into the left of the area and he finished first time, firing the ball hard and low through Codina’s legs via the keeper’s left heel.
Barça might have taken a breather after the third goal but what was particularly impressive at this stage of the game was how we maintained a high intensity especially in winning the ball back quickly on the rare occasions we lost it. Tello and Mascherano came on in place of Alexis and Puyol and soon after coming on Tello struck with Barça’s fourth. Messi’s run through the middle drew the defence towards him which allowed him to slip the ball to Tello to his right, the youngster then picked his spot superbly with a curling shot into the corner from 20 yards.
Getafe continued to show few ideas in attack but then in the 83rd minute a long hopeful ball forward was misjudged by Alba who only succeeded in heading the ball into the path of Alvaro Vazquez who arrived before Mascherano and Valdés to slip in a consolation goal. Four-one might have been enough for most teams but players like Messi and Piqué always want a bit more. Messi had a fine chance from Alves’s cross but sent his header wide but undeterred a minute later he dribbled into the area, again drawing defenders towards him: Escudero managed to stop Messi’s run but only sent the ball straight to Iniesta who capped another Man-of-the-Match performance with a cool finish. Then in injury time Piqué, perhaps bored by the lack of work in defence, appeared on the right wing. He sent the ball back to Alves whose cross found Thiago completely free after beating the offside, and Piqué was on hand to tap home Barça’s sixth after Thiago’s generous assist.

The whole midday kick off thing turned out to be a positive experience. What better breakfast than coffee and Getafe? Of course for fans around the world there will be a mixed feeling to this kick-off time with those to the east of Barcelona being favoured while for culés across the Atlantic this will have been a very early start. Tito Vilanova, who we now know is still controlling every detail while he continues his radiotherapy treatment in New York, will have received a positive boost after his pre-dawn rise this morning. It wasn’t quite a classic performance due to the odd poor pass in the first half, the occasional less-than-clinal finishing, and worst of all the back-header gift from Alba. However, there were plenty of positives the main one being that all the forwards got on the scoresheet. Alexis definitely needed a game like this to get his confidence back while Tello and Villa will also be boosted by finding the net today.
The team can now enjoy a week without a midweek fixture which should have us raring to go for the coming games at Granada next Saturday then in the Champions League at AC Milan on the following Wednesday.

 all goals and highlights --

A run of four games without a win came to an end at Stamford Bridge. It was a victory which keeps us third in the Barclays Premier League table.
Ramires had given us the lead with his sixth goal of the season midway through the first half, finishing well after excellent build-up play between David Luiz and Fernando Torres, and the fact Wigan goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi had been their best player before the break spoke volumes.
Eden Hazard doubled our lead shortly after the restart, converting from a Cesar Azpilicueta cross, but two minutes later the away side were back in it as Shaun Maloney pounced on a loose ball and rounded Cech to score.
Frank Lampard's 12th goal of the season, however, coupled with an injury-time header by substitute Marko Marin, sealed the victory for the Blues.
Chelsea v Wigan
Attention now turns towards the Europa League, and a last 32 clash with Sparta Prague on Thursday.
Team newsRafael Benitez made four changes to the side which was beaten at Newcastle United a week ago. With John Terry suffering an inflammation of his knee, Branislav Ivanovic partnered Gary Cahill in the centre of defence, while Azpilicueta, who made his senior Spain debut in midweek, came in at right-back.
David Luiz returned to the side having missed our last three games with a calf problem, while we were also able to welcome back Eden Hazard from suspension.
With Juan Mata suffering with a virus, Benitez opted to start the Spaniard on the bench, allowing Oscar to play through the middle, with Ramires moving further forward to play wide on the right.
Fernando Torres started in attack, with Demba Ba, who suffered a broken nose on his return to St James' Park, named as one of the substitutes.
Former Chelsea player Franco Di Santo started for the visitors.
First halfWhile the Blues went into the game having not won since the game against Arsenal towards the end of last month, the visitors were equally in need of the points, and it was Roberto Martinez's side who started more positively.
Petr Cech, who played despite a hand injury sustained while away on international duty, was forced into two smart saves within the opening six minutes, first with his feet to deny Di Santo, and immediately after diving to his right to claw away a Shaun Maloney curler which looked destined for the far corner.
We had to wait until the 14th minute for our first real sight of goal. Paul Scharner was adjudged to have fouled Hazard, and from the resulting kick Torres glanced Lampard's delivery narrowly wide.
Two minutes later the Spaniard went close again, taking a brilliant pass from Branislav Ivanovic in his stride before turning Gary Caldwell and firing straight at Al Habsi.
After a slow start, we were gradually beginning to impose our influence on the game, and the pressure eventually told in the 22nd minute.
David Luiz brought the ball out from the back and slipped it in to Torres, who in turn helped it on to the advancing Ramires with a delightful touch; the Brazilian showed a great turn of pace to accelerate away, and as Al Habsi raced off his line he calmly dispatched it into the back of the net.
Chelsea v Wigan
It was a lovely Chelsea move and a goal that, on the balance of play, we probably deserved, but having allowed leads to slip away in our previous two matches, there was still plenty of work to do.
Ten minutes later we almost doubled our advantage; Ramires fed Azpilicueta, and as the youngster picked out Torres with a brilliant cross, the striker's header was expertly tipped over the bar by Al Habsi.
As Chelsea began to string pass after pass together, Wigan were struggling to keep us at bay. Lampard, who had scored in our last three league games, fizzed one just wide from distance, while it took a deflection to deny David Luiz as he rose to meet an Oscar corner.
In truth, it had been a half which we'd completely dominated, but the warning signs remained.
Three minutes before the break, Maloney delivered a dangerous ball from wide on the right; it had just a little too much pace on it for Di Santo, but with James McArthur ready to pounce at the far post, a clever defensive header from Azpilicueta cleared the danger.
Second halfNo doubt pleased with what he'd seen during the opening 45 minutes, Benitez chose not to make any changes at the break, and 10 minutes into the second half it was 2-0.
From a free-kick deep inside our own half, Cahill released Azpilicueta down the right-hand side; his cross found Hazard inside the penalty area, and the Belgian took one touch before drilling his strike beyond Al Habsi.
Chelsea v Wigan
If the second goal was expected to allow us some breathing space, however, what followed two minutes later was a stark reminder, if one was needed, that the game was far from over.
A hopeful ball forward by McCarthur exposed both Cahill and Ivanovic; Maloney was quickest to react, and as Cech attempted to narrow the angle, the Wigan man rounded him and calmly slotted the ball into the empty net.
Sensing the importance of restoring our two-goal advantage, we looked to hit back instantly, and Lampard was unfortunate to see his effort roll inches past Al Habsi's left-hand post after combining with Ashley Cole.
Having reduced the deficit, though, Wigan appeared to feel that there might be something left for them in the game, and when Maloney crashed a shot against the hand of Cole inside the box, they appealed for a penalty.
Replays appeared to confirm it had struck the defender's hand, but much to the relief of the home supporters Mike Dean waved the appeals away.
Benitez made his first substitution of the afternoon with 14 minutes remaining, replacing Oscar, who was indicating he was in some discomfort, with Mata.
With the clock ticking down and the game still in the balance, a delightful move saw us all but secure the three points.
Hazard, who had been a constant threat throughout the second half, worked his way into the box before pulling it back to Mata. Reading the situation intelligently, the substitute let the ball run through his legs and into the path of Lampard, who fired a fantastic strike past Al Habsi into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.
His 198th goal for the club sealed a much-needed win. However, there was still time for more. Two minutes into added time, a powerful drive by Azpilicueta stung the palms of Al Habsi, and it was substitute Marko Marin on hand to head his first goal for the club into an empty net, much to the delight of his team-mates who were quick to embrace the German.

BIOS passwords can add an extra layer of security for desktop and laptop computers. They are used to either prevent a user from changing the BIOS settings or to prevent the PC from booting without a password. Unfortunately, BIOS passwords can also be a liability if a user forgets their password, or changes the password to intentionally lock out the corporate IT department. Sending the unit back to the manufacturer to have the BIOS reset can be expensive and is usually not covered in the warranty. Never fear, all is not lost. There are a few known backdoors and other tricks of the trade that can be used to bypass or reset the BIOS

DISCLAIMER
This article is intended for IT Professionals and systems administrators with experience servicing computer hardware. It is not intended for home users, hackers, or computer thieves attempting to crack the password on a stolen PC. Please do not attempt any of these procedures if you are unfamiliar with computer hardware, and please use this information responsibly. LabMice.net is not responsible for the use or misuse of this material, including loss of data, damage to hardware, or personal injury.

Before attempting to bypass the BIOS password on a computer, please take a minute to contact the hardware manufacturer support staff directly and ask for their recommended methods of bypassing the BIOS security. In the event the manufacturer cannot (or will not) help you, there are a number of methods that can be used to bypass or reset the BIOS password yourself. They include:

Using a manufacturers backdoor password to access the BIOS

Use password cracking software

Reset the CMOS using the jumpers or solder beads.

Removing the CMOS battery for at least 10 minutes

Overloading the keyboard buffer

Using a professional service

Please remember that most BIOS passwords do not protect the hard drive, so if you need to recover the data, simply remove the hard drive and install it in an identical system, or configure it as a slave drive in an existing system. The exception to this are laptops, especially IBM Thinkpads, which silently lock the hard drive if the supervisor password is enabled. If the supervisor password is reset without resetting the and hard drive as well, you will be unable to access the data on the drive.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Backdoor passwords

Many BIOS manufacturers have provided backdoor passwords that can be used to access the BIOS setup in the event you have lost your password. These passwords are case sensitive, so you may wish to try a variety of combinations. Keep in mind that the key associated to "_" in the US keyboard corresponds to "?" in some European keyboards. Laptops typically have better BIOS security than desktop systems, and we are not aware of any backdoor passwords that will work with name brand laptops.

WARNING: Some BIOS configurations will lock you out of the system completely if you type in an incorrect password more than 3 times. Read your manufacturers documentation for the BIOS setting before you begin typing in passwords

Password cracking software

The following software can be used to either crack or reset the BIOS on many chipsets. If your PC is locked with a BIOS administrator password that will not allow access to the floppy drive, these utilities may not work. Also, since these utilities do not come from the manufacturer, use them cautiously and at your own risk.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Using the Motherboard "Clear CMOS" Jumper or Dipswitch settings

Many motherboards feature a set of jumpers or dipswitches that will clear the CMOS and wipe all of the custom settings including BIOS passwords. The locations of these jumpers / dipswitches will vary depending on the motherboard manufacturer and ideally you should always refer to the motherboard or computer manufacturers documentation. If the documentation is unavailable, the jumpers/dipswitches can sometimes be found along the edge of the motherboard, next to the CMOS battery, or near the processor. Some manufacturers may label the jumper / dipswitch CLEAR - CLEAR CMOS - CLR - CLRPWD - PASSWD - PASSWORD - PWD. On laptop computers, the dipswitches are usually found under the keyboard or within a compartment at the bottom of the laptop.
Please remember to unplug your PC and use a grounding strip before reaching into your PC and touching the motherboard. Once you locate and rest the jumper switches, turn the computer on and check if the password has been cleared. If it has, turn the computer off and return the jumpers or dipswitches to its original position.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Removing the CMOS Battery

The CMOS settings on most systems are buffered by a small battery that is attached to the motherboard. (It looks like a small watch battery). If you unplug the PC and remove the battery for 10-15 minutes, the CMOS may reset itself and the password should be blank. (Along with any other machine specific settings, so be sure you are familiar with manually reconfiguring the BIOS settings before you do this.) Some manufacturers backup the power to the CMOS chipset by using a capacitor, so if your first attempt fails, leave the battery out (with the system unplugged) for at least 24 hours. Some batteries are actually soldered onto the motherboard making this task more difficult. Unsoldering the battery incorrectly may damage your motherboard and other components, so please don't attempt this if you are inexperienced. Another option may be to remove the CMOS chip from the motherboard for a period of time.
Note: Removing the battery to reset the CMOS will not work for all PC's, and almost all of the newer laptops store their BIOS passwords in a manner which does not require continuous power, so removing the CMOS battery may not work at all. IBM Thinkpad laptops lock the hard drive as well as the BIOS when the supervisor password is set. If you reset the BIOS password, but cannot reset the hard drive password, you may not be able to access the drive and it will remain locked, even if you place it in a new laptop. IBM Thinkpads have special jumper switches on the motherboard, and these should be used to reset the system.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overloading the KeyBoard Buffer

On some older computer systems, you can force the CMOS to enter its setup screen on boot by overloading the keyboard buffer. This can be done by booting with the keyboard or mouse unattached to the systems, or on some systems by hitting the ESC key over 100 times in rapid succession.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jumping the Solder Beads on the CMOS

It is also possible to reset the CMOS by connecting or "jumping" specific solder beads on the chipset. There are too many chipsets to do a breakdown of which points to jump on individual chipsets, and the location of these solder beads can vary by manufacturer, so please check your computer and motherboard documentation for details. This technique is not recommended for the inexperienced and should be only be used as a "last ditch" effort.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Using a professional service

If the manufacturer of the laptop or desktop PC can't or won't reset the BIOS password, you still have the option of using a professional service. Password Crackers, Inc., offers a variety of services for desktop and laptop computers for between $100 and $400. For most of these services, you'll need to provide some type of legitimate proof of ownership. This may be difficult if you've acquired the computer second hand or from an online auction.
puyol getafeFollowing a week of international friendlies Barça return to action with a league game against Getafe at Camp Nou which will kick off at the unusual time of 12 o’clock midday. The kick off time means a new routine for the players who will stay in a hotel tonight instead of with their families. There will be an 8.00 am wake-up call followed by breakfast at 8.30 before the team makes the short trip to Camp Nou at around 10.30.
International breaks are inevitable but irritating all the same. However, I decided to watch Spain play Uruguay because of the seven La Masia products starting for La Roja and also for Carles Puyol’s 100th international appearance. Puyol’s 45 minutes were not his best but there were good performances from Fabregas and Valdés while Pedro continues to find the net more easily in internationals.
Later, I watched the England-Brazil game from which I can only say how disappointing Brazil were. Okay, it’s just a friendly but I was hoping to see a bit more from the Brazilians. I have no idea whether we will eventually sign Neymar or not but we seem to have a pre-agreement in place. From this showing it would be a definite no in my opinion as he looked pretty lightweight. The saddest thing was to see an off-the-pace Ronaldinho who must surely only have been picked due to some particular appearance money agreement.
I didn’t get to see the Messi-Ibrahimovic showdown but there was excellent news this week with Messi signing a new contract extension to 2018 when he’ll be 31. Messi has often said he would like to finish his career in Argentina but we will have to hope we can keep him a few more years after 2018. How good Messi will be at 34, 35 or 36 remains to be seen but I feel certain he will still be an exceptional player.
In other news this week we had the rather cheeky announcement from Sandro Rosell that there is one Real Madrid player who he likes very much. Now, of course, Rosell may simply have been talking about an admiration for a certain player but the idea that perhaps he has already made contact with someone with a possibility of a transfer has got the Spanish press into a fervour of speculation. All the main sports papers ran polls asking who the player might be, with Iker Casillas and Mesut Ozil receiving most votes. With Valdés on his way out the idea of ‘stealing’ Casillas is very attractive but I have my doubts about whether Casillas would ‘do the dirty’ on the club where he grew up.
For tomorrow’s game we are without Xavi, out for two weeks after injuring a thigh muscle in the 1-1 draw at Valencia last week. Xavi’s injury brought into question the decision not to make more rotations at Valencia. With players like Thiago and Villa available it might have been more sensible to leave a couple of the usual starters on the bench with Xavi being one of the main contenders to benefit from a rest.
messi getafe
However, given that next week we have no midweek game it seems likely we will play our strongest eleven tomorrow. The only doubts would appear to be whether to play Puyol or Mascherano in defence, and how to substitute Xavi. We could give David Villa, Alexis Sanchez or even Cristian Tello a chance in attack with Iniesta moving back into midfield or we could take the option of a straight swap with Thiago taking Xavi’s role. I know there are many fans clamouring for Villa to get more starts, however, I won’t be at all surprised to see him on the bench again. The Alba-Fabregas-Iniesta connection on the left has been very effective and it seems Vilanova and Roura are reluctant to break it.
barcelona 4-0 getafe alexis goal
Our opponents Getafe looked like a possible contender for a place in Europe next season after a good start to the season which saw them as high as sixth place after Jornada 14. However, they have since taken only seven points from their last eight games which has seen them drop down to twelfth in the table and they will need to pick up if they do not want to see themselves involved in the relegation battle. Their defence has been leaking too many goals this season which has seen coach Luis Garcia Plaza take action in the winter transfer window bringing in two defenders on loan, the Argentinian international Fede Fernandez from Napoli and Sergio Escudero from Schalke 04. Getafe’s task tomorrow won’t be helped by having six players out including injured right back Juan Valera and goalkeeper Moya who is suspended. However, they have Pedro Leon fit again as an option for the right wing while Medhi Lacen and the dangerous Abdelaziz Barrada have returned from the African Cup and could both start.
The midday kick-off is sure to be a bit strange for many of us, but for the players who are used to training in the morning there should be no problems. Last season we won the corresponding fixture 4-0 with a brace from Alexis. I predict another high-scoring victory tomorrow to take us another step closer to our 22nd Liga. If the kick-off time means an early start for you then don’t forget to set your alarm clock and go easy on the partying tonight!
Barça’s 20-man squad: Valdés, Pinto, Alves, Montoya, Piqué, Bartrá, Mascherano, Puyol, Adriano, Alba, Song, Busquets, Thiago, Fabregas, Iniesta, Pedro, Alexis, Messi, Villa, Tello.
Possible teams:
Barça: Valdés; Alves, Piqué, Puyol, Alba; Thiago, Busquets, Fabregas; Pedro, Messi, Iniesta.
Getafe: Codina; Miguel Torres, Fernandez, Alexis Delgado, Escudero; Lacen, Xavi Torres; Diego Castro, Barrada, Gavilan; Colunga.

Estadio de Mestalla — Valencia
Referee:‬ José González‎

Valencia held Barcelona to a 1-1 draw in La Liga as their energetic yet resolute display made for a frustrating night at the Mestalla for the Catalans.

Ernesto Valverde's had set out to refuse the Blaugrana their usual time on the ball and it was a tactic that looked to have worked superbly as Ever Banega put them ahead. However, Lionel Messi equalised from the spot to score in a record 12th consecutive Liga fixture.

Both teams opened the game with a lot of energy, but Barca looked more threatening as they were largely in control of possession. However, they were unable to fashion any chances to test Vicente Guaita as los Che defended in numbers and pressed quickly.

Valencia complemented their enthusiastic defence by playing on the break when they managed to wrest the ball away from their opponents, with Roberto Soldado keen to make an impact.

Midway through the first half the striker's bright run came to an end on the edge of the box due to a trip from Javier Mascherano. Tino Costa struck the free kick but he failed to get it past the wall and his team's appeals for handball from Xavi were ignored.

Their resilience at the back continued to frustrate the Blaugrana and Valverde's men were rewarded in the 33rd minute. Soldado's cross was headed away by Gerard Pique, but only as far as Banega who brought the ball down and rifled a low shot past Victor Valdes at his near post.

 Leo Messi - Barcelona

Barca were handed a route back into the game as Joao Pereira clumsily cut down Pedro in the box in the 39th minute. Messi stepped up to take the penalty and fired an unstoppable effort into the top corner for his 34th Liga goal of the season.

The teams went into the break level but with just five second-half minutes played los Che nearly regained the lead. Andres Guardado's cross was met by Soldado but he could not guide his header inside of Valdes' post.

The game continued to go from end to end and five minutes later Cesc Fabregas really should have put the Catalan side ahead after Messi's defence-splitting through-ball, though his shot only rippled the side netting.

Valencia were showing no signs of tiring as they continued to press the Barcelona players with great intensity, keeping the visitors out of their usual rhythm.

Sergio Canales replaced Banega in the 64th minute and it did not take long for the former Real Madrid man to make his presence known. From Guardado's cutback a fantastic, arrowed shot towards looked to be heading for the top corner until Valdes fingertips turned it wide of the post.

The keeper was once again in fine form in the 89th minute as a brilliant double save, the second of which came from Soldado, stopped the hosts from stealing all three points at the death.

Nevertheless, Valencia secured a well-earned point that could also see Barcelona's advatange at the top of the table cut to nine points if Atletico Madrid defeat Betis later on Sunday.

INITIALLY Posted by Andrew Howley of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHY Staff

The annual Google Science Fair launches today, inviting students around the world ages 13-18 to explore and pursue their interests in science and technology. For the past two years, thousands of students from more than 90 countries worldwide have submitted research projects that address some of the most challenging projects we face today. This being the largest online science fair in the world, prizes are pretty big themselves. The grand prize includes a National Geographic Expedition to the Galápagos Islands. National Geographic Explorers T.H. Culhane and Enric Sala are among the renowned panel of scientists that will serve as Science Fair judges.

For the past two years I have had the Privilege – and I mean that with a capital P – to act as a judge for the Google Science Fair.  And the privilege doesn’t come from rubbing shoulders with some of the world’s greatest scientists, engineers and educators.
No, the privilege comes from having a ringside seat to a sincere spectacle of hope performed by young people from around the planet. The privilege comes from being able to interact with these young researchers, innovators and inventors whose earnest endeavors in engineering and science are on display in the large Google Science Fair hall for the edification of the public.
Each year, Google is transformed into a mini “Palais de Decouvertes”, an “Innoventions Pavilion” where the most extraordinary discoveries are revealed to the world, from simple water purification and hydroponics systems that anybody can build, re-designs for toilets and new ways to monitor air pollution on land and biodiversity in water, to high tech solar trackers, rotational 3D imaging devices, ways of sensing music through touch and neural networks to detect breast cancer, to name just a few from last year.
The difference is that these are students, but potentially the architects of our “bright, big beautiful tomorrow”.  They are kids from all walks of life, from every nation, and every socioeconomic circumstance. They are us, when we were young and filled with promise and hope, before the scar tissue of disappointments clouded our vision.

To have the opportunity to come back each year and continue the dialectic, not just observing, but engaging, as a humbled adult, in the science fair dialog these young people carry, is one of the greatest honors in my academic and professional career.  We adults who get to participate in this now yearly event, are welcomed through the unguarded openness of the student participants — and that is the privilege of being involved with the Google Science Fair.
I feel like a kid again when National Geographic sends me to Google. I’m infused with a contact high of optimism and camaraderie.  The judging I do, wearing my grown-up-explorer’s hat as a college professor who teaches environmental science, NGO director and National Geographic Explorer, does not pass judgment on their talents. It merely helps shepherd the ideas into safe pastures.
The participating students all understand this. I have never caught a whiff of resentment from the other finalists when we announce the grand prize winners.  They cheer each other on, and hug each other and form life long friendships to support each other’s continued growth.
Each year when I come back to Google I find that the Google Science Fair family has grown. They actually call it a “family”, an ever expanding global team of explorers.  They stay in touch, these remarkable kids, through Google+ Hangouts and other social media, whether they are in Swaziland, India, the Middle East or the Americas.

Two years of Google Science Fair challenges have already laid the groundwork for a game changing way to approach problem solving – not only from the grassroots, but from the budding stems of youth engaged in STEM learning. These remarkable young people – all those thousands of students from every walk of life who worked on and submitted projects and ideas from around the world in 2011 and 2012, created the bedrock.
Now it’s your turn to change the world.
And it will be my privilege to get to know you.

Enter the Google Science Fair

Summary Stamford Bridge is smiling once again after two first-half goals proved enough to win this London derby against an Arsenal side who came back strongly after the interval.
Juan Mata continued his run of scoring in every game he has started against Arsenal, netting early on, and Frank Lampard was yet again reliable from the penalty spot to double the advantage with quarter-of-an-hour gone of a game played in light snow throughout.
Chelsea continued to play well up to the break but couldn't make the most of our chances. When Arsenal increased the tempo of their play after the break, our grip on the game slackened and Theo Walcott pulled a goal back. The Gunners continued to look the better side but it was more a case of pressure on the Blues defence than clear=cut chances, and Petr Cech was only occasionally called into action as our backline stood firm to secure all three points.
Team news David Luiz was unavailable with a minor injury so Branislav Ivanovic came back into defence. Fernando Torres was centre-forward with Demba Ba on the bench. The midfield was unchanged from the midweek Southampton game.
Arsenal were totally unchanged from their FA Cup replay win over Swansea on the same night.

First halfIf Chelsea's confidence in playing at home had been further knocked by the disappointing draw against Southampton, it didn't show in the opening 45 minutes.

Fernando Torres was sporting a new short haircut and he set the tone by making a bright start to the game, teeing up Lampard for a shot off-target and then skipping past Sagna, only to be fouled. The Arsenal full-back might have been booked had it happened later in the game.

It was Arsenal's centre-forward who had the first chance to score however, Olivier Giroud played through onside by Walcott who had run inside of Ashley Cole. With time to take aim, the Frenchman missed by a yard.
Chelsea rubbed it in almost immediately by going up the other end and taking the lead. Arsene Wenger was left complaining of a foul when Ramires won the ball from Coquelin but play went on, and Azpilicueta lofted a pass into the box which Mata killed with his first touch, then fired high into the net with his next. It was a superb goal from the Spaniard.
Chelsea v Arsenal
His former Real Oviedo team-mate on the other side, Santi Carzola, drew a save from Petr Cech soon after before Chelsea threatened the Arsenal goal once again. This time it was skilful individualism from Hazard, gliding into the area and then testing Szczesny at his near post with a powerful shot.
Chelsea took a 2-0 lead for the second game running after 15 minutes. Mata was involved again, placing a pass to unmarked Ramires who had beaten the offside flag. The Brazilian was sidestepping Szczesny when the Arsenal keeper brought him down. Referee Martin Atkinson pointed to the spot but only produced a yellow card when it appeared a clear goal-scoring opportunity had been denied. Rafael Benitez was not impressed with that decision.
Chelsea v Arsenal
Lampard opted for placement rather than power this time to make it 195 Chelsea goals. His last three goals have been penalties.
Arsenal were looking ragged and were being stretched by Mata and Hazard in particular. A cross beyond Sagna gave Cole the chance to head at goal but stretching, he couldn't hit the target in front of the Arsenal fans.
Chelsea's next chance came on 35 minutes, Hazard and Oscar moving the ball out of our half to Mata. He passed out to Ramires on the right who did well to find a yard beyond Vermaelen but then shot wildly into the Shed End.
Arsenal were making Chelsea defend more in this quarter of an hour before the break, but the Blues continued to carry a threat. Torres should have done better than slice a shot wide on the stroke of half-time after a Mata free-kick had been half-cleared.

Second halfGiven recent games at the Bridge, the Chelsea support had collective fingers-crossed that Arsenal would be given nothing to bite onto at the start of the second period, and had to be thankful when first Mertesacker with a header and then Walcott with a shot from dangerous positions gave Cech relatively easy saves to make.
Giroud then didn't make sufficient contact with a header after Arsenal left-back Gibbs had counter-attacked and crossed.
Torres, quiet since the opening minutes, briefly got the better of Mertesacker but the attack fizzled out and it was not a great shock when Arsenal pulled a goal back on 57 minutes. Possession was lost when the ball was played up towards Torres and Cazorla slipped a pass through the middle to Walcott who was just onside. There was no catching the England international who kept his nerve to beat Cech.
The Gunners were in the ascendency and shot wide with a good chance to level. Most of the game was now being played in the Chelsea half.
But then a hopeful long pass towards Torres was misread totally by Mertesacker and the Chelsea no.9 was suddenly away. But he took a touch too strong as he closed in on the target and the keeper was able to intervene.
Chelsea v Arsenal
Suddenly Torres looked to have the beating of the Arsenal backline for pace but after another charge clear down the wing, he couldn't pick out Hazard who was the only blue shirt in the area at which to aim.
Benitez made his first change on 71 minutes, Bertrand coming on for Oscar. Chelsea had a corner which was cleared. Ramires tested Szczesny with a shot that was scrambled away from goal.

On 79 minutes Ramires robbed Wilshere deep in the Chelsea half and attacked a big space ahead, but couldn't find a way through when he hit the Arsenal defence. One minute later, Demba Ba replaced Torres.
The substitute could have made a near instant impact. Moments after coming on he was racing down the left, played onside by Vermaelen as Bertrand lofted the ball forward. Ba took the ball beyond the keeper who had charged out but from a tight angle and running out of space, couldn't then beat Vermaelen who was back on the line.
Chelsea v Arsenal
There were less than five minutes left on the clock when a Mata mistake deep in the Chelsea half led to Cole fouling Sagna on the edge of the area, at the cost of a booking. Thankfully Vermaelen couldn't hit the target with his free-kick.
Bertrand had a goal-bound volley blocked by Sagna as the game drew to a close but there were still five minutes of stoppage time to negotiate. Chelsea's defensive fortitude came to the fore as Cahill tackled Walcott expertly and then headed a threatening cross away, and then enough pressure was put on Vermaelen that he could only head another cross over.
Chelsea v Arsenal

singNshock alarm clock
Designed for anyone that habitually relies on the snooze button to avoid getting up, the singNshock alarm clock offers a jolt of electricity to start the day.
Currently in the prototype phase, the singNshock alarm clock combines music with a slight jolt of electricity to help get you out of bed in the morning. Developed by 19-year-old automotive design student Sankalp Sinha, the futuristic mock-up of the alarm clock includes a digital touch panel on the front with icons for battery power, speaker volume, brightness level, time, music selection and an on/off switch for the shock feature. Sinha has built the speakers into the rear of the device in addition to a MMC slot for a 32GB SD memory card that stores your favorite music.
singNshock led lightingRegarding the shock feature, the large aluminum coated button at the top of the clock is designed to turn off the alarm each morning as well as deliver a mild electrical shock when active.
According to the project details, the level of the jolt is measured in millivolts and would likely be much milder than a typical shock from a buildup of static electricity. Sinha came up with the idea of using an electric shock to kickstart his brain in the morning after waking up late for class several times in a row.
Along the sides of the clock, Sinha wants to include LED lighting in a variety of colors which can be altered by the user. In addition, the concept designs of the singNshock alarm clock includes six different colors for the exterior body style. According to the comments located on the singNshock alarm clock information page, Sinha is currently looking into using Kickstarter to fund the development of the alarm clock. According to the Huffington Post, Sinha is also reaching out to individual investors as well as researching manufacturers in order to start production of the device. He’s also looking into distributing the alarm clock online as well as within retail stores.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, California — Want an easier way to log into your Gmail account? How about a quick tap on your computer with the ring on your finger?
This may be closer than you think. Google’s security team outlines this sort of ring-finger authentication in a new research paper, set to be published late this month in the engineering journal IEEE Security & Privacy Magazine. In it, Google Vice President of Security Eric Grosse and Engineer Mayank Upadhyay outline all sorts of ways they think people could wind up logging into websites in the future — and it’s about time.
2012 may have been the year that the password broke. It seemed like everyone on the internet received spam e-mail or desperate pleas for cash — the so-called “Mugged in London” scam — from the e-mail accounts of people who had been hacked. And Wired’s own Mat Honan showed everyone just how damaging a hack can be.
The guys who hacked Honan last August deleted his Gmail account. They took over his Twitter handle and posted racist messages. And they remote-wiped his iPhone, iPad, and laptop computer, deleting a year’s worth of e-mails and photographs. In short, they erased his digital life.
Passwords are a cheap and easy way to authenticate web surfers, but they’re not secure enough for today’s internet, and they never will be.
‘Passwords and simple bearer tokens such as cookies are no longer sufficient to keep users safe.’
— Eric Grosse and Mayank Upadhyay
Google agrees. “Along with many in the industry, we feel passwords and simple bearer tokens such as cookies are no longer sufficient to keep users safe,” Grosse and Upadhyay write in their paper.
Thus, they’re experimenting with new ways to replace the password, including a tiny Yubico cryptographic card that — when slid into a USB (Universal Serial Bus) reader — can automatically log a web surfer into Google. They’ve had to modify Google’s web browser to work with these cards, but there’s no software download and once the browser support is there, they’re easy to use. You log into the website, plug in the USB stick and then register it with a single mouse click.
They see a future where you authenticate one device — your smartphone or something like a Yubico key — and then use that almost like a car key, to fire up your web mail and online accounts.
In the future, they’d like things to get even easier, perhaps connecting to the computer via wireless technology.

Google Declares War on the Password

“We’d like your smartphone or smartcard-embedded finger ring to authorize a new computer via a tap on the computer, even in situations in which your phone might be without cellular connectivity,” the Googlers write.
The future may not exactly be password-free, but it will at be least free of those complex, hard-to-remember passwords, says Grosse. “We’ll have to have some form of screen unlock, maybe passwords but maybe something else,” he says, “but the primary authenticator will be a token like this or some equivalent piece of hardware.”
That means that if someone steals your card or your smart-ring, you’d better report it stolen pretty quickly.
Grosse and Upadhyay believe that once enough websites support this device-centric login technique, people mostly won’t need strong passwords, except in rare occasions — when they’re making significant changes to their account, for example.
But for Google’s password-liberation plan to really take off, they’re going to need other websites to play ball. “Others have tried similar approaches but achieved little success in the consumer world,” they write. “Although we recognize that our initiative will likewise remain speculative until we’ve proven large scale acceptance, we’re eager to test it with other websites.”
So they’ve developed a (as yet unnamed) protocol for device-based authentication that they say is independent of Google, requires no special software to work — aside from a web browser that supports the login standard — and which prevents web sites from using this technology to track users.

The great thing about Google’s approach is that it circumvents the really common attack that even Google’s existing mobile-phone authentication system can’t prevent: phishing.
Two years ago, Google introduced a two-step login option, which makes it harder for criminals to break into your account. With this option, Google typically sends users a secret code via text message every time they try to log into their accounts from a new computer.
The problem is that if criminals can convince you that you’re visiting Gmail even when you’re not, they can trick you into entering that secret code. In fact, the bad guys can even turn two-step authentication against legitimate users. Sometimes, they add their own phone number to the account “just to slow down account recovery by the true owner,” the paper states.
What do you do in the meantime? Well, you use that existing two-step authentication. It’s not perfect. But it’s better than just a password.
The good news is that people are actually using it — and we can thank Mat Honan for that. Honan’s story inspired a lot of people to lock down their Gmail accounts by linking them to their mobile phones.
“In the two days following Mat’s Wired article, a quarter-million people signed up for two step authentication,” says Grosse. He can’t say exactly how many people sign up on a typical day, but “it’s much less than that,” he says.
You can see the Epic Hack spike here, in this graph provided by Google:

Everyone logs into Google services like Gmail using a user name and password, but with Google’s two-step process, when you’re logging in from an unfamiliar computer, you also get a six-digit number messaged to your phone that you must enter before you can log in.
Honan says that if he’d had two-step authentication on his Gmail account, the whole incident probably would not have amounted to anything. But until the spammers and scammers decide to call it quits, we still need that Google ring.
Update: this story has been corrected to indicate the type of Yubico key device used by Google
